Pattern mixing isn’t a new concept, and it certainly isn’t exclusive to the LuLaRoe brand. However, with LuLaRoe’s wide selection of prints, colors, solids, and fabrics – their clothing makes pattern mixing easy and super accessible!
Anyone can become a pattern mixing pro – just follow these three simple rules!
Rule 1: Find at least one color in common.
This rule is the easiest. Start by grabbing a few pieces that have at least one color in common. Otherwise, the outfit just won’t make sense! We love how the mustard color (very trendy for fall) that makes up the primary color of this Gigi top pairs perfectly with the mustard background color of this Carly dress.
Rule 2: Mix a busy pattern with a “neutral” one.
A neutral pattern is simple, repetitive, and uncluttered. Some perfect examples of neutral patterns are stripes and polkadots.
Here we show how the neutral polkadot of this Azure skirt pairs beautifully with the much busier pattern of this Classic T. Building on the first rule, this outfit also boasts a common lavender color.
Other designs can qualify as neutral, provided that the pattern is repetitive and not busy. Take, for example, this Irma/Leggings combination. The Irma tunic is neither a stripe nor polkadot, but it’s pattern is repeating and almost in the background. Paired here with a bolder and much busier floral print, and tied together by the pumpkin color, this pattern mixing is gorgeous!
Rule 3: Size matters.
When it comes to pattern mixing, even with the first two rules in place, an outfit can look too busy when both pieces have similarly sized prints. Instead, select one larger pattern and one with a smaller scale.
This outfit featuring a micro-stripe Carly dress and floral Shirley kimono outlines this rule very well. The Carly has such a small pattern that it appears almost solid. Whereas the floral design is big and bold. The pink and red colors tie both pieces together, and the Carly offers a neutral pattern while the floral Shirley is loud and proud.
